(二)句型结构
1. "But it pains me," I said, "to find that you both have
been panhandling so long that it no longer embarrasses you."
"看到你们兄弟俩老是伸手要钱而不感到害羞,我真痛心。"我说。
该句中it为形式主语,不定式短语to find that…you是句子的真主语。Find后面的that从句是宾语从句,作find的宾语。在宾语从句中,还包含so…that…引起的结果状语从句。Have
been panhandling为现在完成时态,表示从过去某一时刻一直持续到现在的动作。Embarrass:cause to feel ashamed
or socially uncomfortable, 使窘迫。常用被动语态。
例:She was embarrassed by his impolite questions.
他的不礼貌问题使她感到窘迫。
2.By midnight, I was comfortably settled
in a hotel room far from home..
午夜时分,我已经再一个离家很远的旅馆里舒舒服服地住了下来。
[句型]settle sb. + adv., settle oneself in a place, be settled.其中settle
in…:place(sb. or oneself) in a position of rest or comfort安顿
例:She settled her baby in the cradle and went into the kitchen to make
some coffee.
她将婴儿安顿在摇篮中后,走进厨房煮些咖啡。
He soon fell asleep after he settled himself in the comfortable bed.
他躺在舒适的床上,很快就睡着了。
3.What I was being blamed for, it turned
out, was a newspaper strike which made it necessary to hand deliver the
advertising inserts that normally are included with the Sunday paper.

句中it turned out为插入语,表示"原来是这么回事",常用来说明说话人的看法或态度。What I was blamed
for是主语从句,插入语it turned out后的部分是一个系表结构的谓语。其中"which made it …Sunday
paper"是定语从句,修饰名词strike。定语从句中又包含that normally…paper这一定语从句,修饰名词inserts。
blame sb. for sth.: fix on sb. the responsibility for sth. Done(badly
or wrongly) or not done 责备,归咎
例:He blamed his teacher for his failure. 他把他的失败归咎于他的老师。
I have nothing to blame myself for. 我没有什么可责怪自己的。
turn out: prove ( to be) in the result结果证明,结果是
例:On examination it turns out that his arguments are groundless.
经过检查,结果发现他的那些论点不能成立。
Everything turned out well.一切都很好。
4.They are crammed wall-to-wall all through
the house in stacks taller than you eldest son.
我们家整个房子从东墙到西墙,从南墙到北墙都堆满了广告,一堆又一堆,比你的大儿子还要高。
"they are crammed"为被动结构。Through 表示纵向,而across则表示横向。
Taller than your eldest son是形容词的比较结构,修饰名词stacks。
比较:The cat ran across the street quickly.猫迅速地跑过街道。
We went through a long corridor before we came to a red door.
在到达那扇红门之前,我们走了很长一段走廊。
cram vt. Make too full; put too much into 填塞,勉强塞入
例:This is an easy crammed with quotations.这是一篇充满引用句的文章。
5.Her voice kept rising, as if working
its way out of the range of the human ear.
她的嗓门越来越高,好像超过了耳朵的承受能力。
keep doing sth 持续做某事
例:I'm sorry I have kept you waiting.我很抱歉使你久等了。
work one's way: make one's way by work or effort.努力完成
例:He's working his way through medical school.他以半工半读的方式读医学院。
6."Well, you had better get those
guys banding and sliding as fast as they can, and I'll talk to you later.
Got a lunch date."
好了,你让孩子们尽快地分别装袋!我等会儿再给你打电话,我约好要和人共进午餐。
Had better do sth.最好做某事 get sb. doing sth.使某人不停地做某事
Got a lunch date. 这句话省略了主语和助动词,完整地句子为I've got a lunch date.
例:You had better mind your own business.你最好只管你自己的事情。
The farmer got the horse running for three hours.农夫让马一直跑了三个钟头。
7.I had had a marvelous steak, but knew
better by now than to say so.
我吃的牛排好极了,但现在还是不说为妙。
Had had为过去完成时态,其中第一个had是助动词,第二个had是have地过去分词形式。
Know better than to do sth.: be wise or experienced enough not (to do
sth.). 很懂得/很明白(而不至于)做某事。
例:You should know better than to play with knives.你应该懂得不能玩刀。
8.Obtaining an audience with son NO. 1,
I snarled:"I'll kill you if you threaten one of those kids again!"
我跟大儿子一通话,便咆哮道:"如果倪再威胁那些孩子,我就对你不客气了。"
Obtaining…NO. 1为现在分词结构,作状语,修饰说明谓语动词snarl。Son NO. 1指大儿子。"obtain","audience"和"NO.
1"这几个较为正式的词的使用,说明儿子遇到的问题的严重性。
例:Taking a key of his pocket, he opened the door.
他从口袋里掏出钥匙把门打开。
Not knowing her address, we couldn't get in touch with her.
由于不知道她的地址,我们没有办法和她联系。 9."but that would cut out profit," he
suggested.
"不过那会减少我们的利润,"他提醒道。
Would为虚拟将来形式,条件从句if we offered a bonus of a dollar every hour to the worker
who fills the most bags被省略。句子用虚拟语气表示他不愿这样做。
例:If I were in her place, I would think differently.
我要是处于她的地位,我会有不同的想法。
I would certainly go if I had the time.
要是有时间,我一定去。(但我没有时间)
10.Dad,you have just worked a profound
change in my personality.
爸爸,你的话使我深受启发,茅塞顿开。
work vi. (of a plan, method, etc.) be effective; have the desired outcome
有效,获得理想效果
例:Your suggestion won't work in practice.你的建议在实践中行不通。
The charm worked.那符咒奏效了。
11.The bonus program had worked until
someone demanded to see the color of cash.
奖金计划行之有效,直到后来有人对能否兑现表示怀疑,提出把钱拿出来给大家看看。
该句中的work与上一条中的 work用法相同。

一直向前走到邮局再向左传。

have no business to do/doing something: have no reason or right to so
sth.没有理由(权利)做某事
例:The weather has no business to be so warm in winter.冬天天气不该这么暖和。
settle for:accept (sth or doing sth less than one had hoped )勉强同意,接受
例:Many women refuse to settle for staying at home as housewives.
许多妇女不愿只带在家里作家庭主妇。
13.Then you might as well make a little
money from them.
既然不用,你还不如用他们卖点钱。
may /might as well do sth: have no strong reason not to do sth不妨
例:We may as well finish the job before we have.
我们不妨在离开之前就把工作做完。
You might as well take an umbrella with you when you go out.
