1)utter 意为"完全的",sheer 意为"纯粹的,绝对的"。两个词一般可以通用,等于absolute, complete。

The interpretation of the poem is sheer nonsense.对这首诗的阐释简直是胡说八道。
2)当utter 意味着"全部"的时候,不能用sheer 代替:
