1.There is no surgical patient I cannot treat competently, treat just as well or better than any other surgeon.

I can treat any surgical patient competently…

2. It was the only way I could find the peace of mind I needed to relax.

It was the only way to relax.
加入修饰the only way的定语从句就成了:
It was the only way in which I could find the peace of mind to relax.
It was the only way (in which) I could find the peace of mind (that/which) I needed to relax.

3. There were still situations in which I couldn't be certain my decision had been the right one, but I had learned to accept this as a constant problem for a surgeon, one that could never be completely resolved--and I could live with it.

There were still situations in which I couldn't be certain my decision had been the right one
第二部分为:but I had learned to accept this as a constant problem for a surgeon
第三部分为:and I could live with it
那么剩余部分one that could never be completely resolved为插入语,或考虑为problem的同位语,补充说明这种problem到底是什么问题。

4. Reviewing it wasn't going to help and I knew that with my knowledge and experience, any decision I'd made was bound to be a sound one.

Reviewing it wasn't going to help,由动名词作主语,it指代上句中提到的decision,时态为过去将来时。
I knew that with my knowledge and experience, any decision I'd made was bound to be a wound one,这句本身的结构为主语I+谓语动词knew +宾语从句that…,其中缩写形式的'd为had,本课中出现很多缩写的'd,有时指had,有时指should,要看它后边的动词是原形还是分词形式,句末的one是代词,指代decision.

5.I'd sweated through my share of stab wounds of the belly, of punctured lungs, of compound fractures. I'd sweated over them for five years. I didn't need to sweat any more.

sweat through在……
As the eldest son in a poor family, John took his share of supporting the family from an early age.
You have your share of the victory.
You haven't done much work in your share.

6.I knew that when I was out in practice I would inevitably err at one time or another and operate on someone who didn't need surgery sit on someone who did.

err v.
To err is human.
It's better to err on the side of mercy.
operate on sb.
A doctor can never be careful enough when he operates on a patient.
句末的did是省略形式,完整的说法应为who did need surgery。

7.I could accept this fact with calmness because I knew that if I wasn't able to avoid a mistake, chances are that no other surgeon could have, either.

chances are that…(不正式用法) It's likely that…
If you agree to have this operation, chances are that you may recover sooner.
With such a strong rival, your chances of winning the game are slim.
If you take a bus, you have more chance of getting there by the sunset.
